Laureen Bartfield, DVM - Program Director

I was working with SNAP-NC at the Granville County Animal Shelter when I went into the kennel building to use the restroom. Upon entering, I noticed a little puppy roaming loose in the kennel area. I found his kennel by locating the rest of the litter of pups that looked just like him. I put him inside and went in search of the restroom. When I came back out, there was the same little pup, looking at me with his one blue eye and one brown eye and with a "smile" on his face - a grin where he pulled his lips back and showed his "smile" of little teeth. I put him back in his kennel again and left the building. When I got closer to the SNAP-NC mobile hospital, I noted that this little guy was, once again, at my feet, "smiling". Something told me that I was meant to rescue him. He was in very bad shape - covered with ticks, skinny, and he had mange. He and his siblings were likely the offspring of a stray mom, or one that had little care. The fate of the little pups, in the condition that they were in, was not good - people were more likely to adopt healthy looking pups, than those in this litter. I knew that they were very likely to be euthanized. So, I took this little guy home, and named him, appropriately, "Houdini"! After much care and treatment, Houdini recovered and was adopted by a law student who lives in Chapel Hill. I miss "Houdi" and his smile, but I am glad that he persisted on the day that I first met him. He is pictured here with Abby, the niece of our Office Manager, Kelly.
